Auntie Annie wants you!

I am thrilled to say that my gardening endeavors and willing admittance of clueless-ness has inspired my (very busy!) friend Caroline to plant a small container garden on her Condo balcony of tomatoes, lettuce and basil. It got my gears going and so I would like to start:

Project: Inspire to Grow

All you need to do is inspire one person to grow ONE thing. Just one! Buy it for him/her if you need to. There are no excuses about not having a yard for a garden. You need one container...it can even be as simple as chives.

Why? What's the point? You're asking. Well, it's kind of like paying it forward to some degree. The payment is really reconnecting us all to our food sources and appreciation for the love, care and attention to grow real raw and good-for-you foods.

Whatta ya say? Caroline promised to give me updates of her successes and failures. (There will be failures!) and I want to hear from the rest of you should you decide to take on this project as well. Inspire just ONE person.

Happy growing and eating,
--Annie

  1. I LOVE IT!!!! I have done that with lots of flower garden stuff in the past few years and a ton again this year! AND, I got my sister into container gardening at her rental house this year. Just last year she still poohoo'd me for being excited about my little baby seedlings popping up or about the lack of groceries I needed to buy last summer....and NOW she planted 5 veggies and 2 herbs in containers!

  2. Ok...I want to take on myself as the weary and scared person to convince to garden so here is the challenge: I have a yard but it is all in shade and only a bit of it has grass (the rest is ivy). As a non-gardener, what is one thing that I can plant as a small win to encourage me to do more? It needs to be easy, edible, not need much sun, and take up a small amount of room....

  3. I love it! I'm going to have my Garden Club kids each choose a seedling and container to take home for the summer. Even if they're in apartments, right? Great call, Annie...

  4. Hi Annie! I'm looking forward to following your thoughts and adventures - thanks for publishing! The bean seedlings in my room are nearly ready to go home with their growers, so I'll share with them your project. I love the pay it forward ethos. I bought the book "Square Foot Gardening" and am trying that in my yard this year - from peonies to peas!

  5. Update from the Urban Balcony:
The little green tomatoes are hanging on for dear life in this crazy hot/cold windy weather.
The lettuce sadly went into the compost on Thursday. I shed a few tears of anguish over my said failure, but luckily my spunky friend Annie keeps me going with a friendly flower pot that will replace Lettuce.
Basil- well, as my boyfriend Jason puts it, it's going to be a YUMMY summer of SALAD!
